The Arcotete is a impressive  natural arch, the last remaining segment of a system of ancient caves that have been eroded, coupled with a sob and mysterious story.

The walls up to 40m high have capricious geological formations with stalactites hanging from the ceiling increase of limestone stalagmites that resemble large bones, and a river pool spread like little soft at the bottom. Its beauty thanks to the passage of time.

The story

Named after a dramatic story, which has the French soldier Jean Francoise D’Arcotete was in love with a beautiful lady of San Cristobal, but knowing she didn’t felt the same, and instead, was about to get married, decided to end his live near the cave where an underground river crossing. Since then, the sharp stone that simulates a face in the back of the cave is the image of the Frenchman who left his country and his life by a woman. They have the natives of the area that the ghost of the French appears at night in February, sitting in one of the rocks at the entrance of the cave, crying for his beloved.

Activities

You cant get bored in Arcotete,  that’s for sure, as you will find wholesale activities, entering  you can rent one of the palapas that includes five chairs, you can take your grill meat or whatever you prefer. If you plan to buy food there, we do not recommend because there is no restaurant, only local food vendors lightly. There are bike rentals a half hour and you can stroll along the paths arranged for them, they also have beautiful horses for rides on a specific route. Hiking, flora and fauna, recreation everywhere. You can also camp.

For those who like the extreme

The walls are a paradise for rock climbing, where there are already some armed climbing routes. From the top of the arch you can practice rappelling. At the top of the zip are Arcotete. And inside the arc, caving cave where you can practice.

Recommendations

Comfortable hiking shoes or sneakers, clothing very comfortable Swetter or jacket, sunglasses, hat, water, camera. In wet weather the ground is wet and slippery. You can go with family, friends, or couples.

Location

This attraction is located only 4 km northeast of San Cristobal de las Casas, the road that vaa Tenejapa. In the center you can go to church of Guadalupe, from the La Garita.
