HISTORIA DE TUXTLA GUTIÉRREZ | San Marcos Cathedral

Located in Tuxtla Gutierrez at a side of the “Central Park”, it goes all the way back to the second half of the XVI century. Its dedicated to the saint of Tuxtla Gutiérrez, “Saint Marcos”.

The Dominican friars of the “Tecpatán” convent of the bishopric of the royal city of Chiapa, they built the first catholic temple in this place and they dedicated it to “Saint Marcos” the evangelist. Year in which it was also prefaced the name of the village “Tuchtla” (Tuxtla) to Saint Marcos, and since then its called “Saint Marcos Tuchtla. After 1560 that the construction of the temple dedicated to Saint Marcos the Evangelist,  saint that is represented by a “winged lion”.

The cathedral has suffered several modifications that have covered in a way its colonial style. Its tower holds 48 bells that every hour sing a calm melody, moment in which the figures of the 12 apostles parade over a rail in its front façade, this makes it a very peculiar cathedral in all México.
