It is 8 pm and darkness is thick. We are in the middle of a lagoon and the darkness, on the fragile balance of a boat more than slight. Beneath us the patter of the water on the boat and the dense fog are hiding a toothed and terrible threat: the crocodile.
The most shocking thing is that we are there because we want to be there. The sighting of crocodiles is one of the offers that the Ecotourism Center Tres Lagunas (Three Lagoons), can only be accomplished at night and quietly, or almost quietly if we take in consideration that we are at the jungle, full of animal sounds which is life itself flowing perennially all the time. That is why we are not using a large boat but rather a small one, similar to a kayak or a canoe of 3 meters in length, a very small height and just about 50 centimeters wide.
It is very light, the guide tells us, “so we do not make noise and that way the crocodile cannot hear us coming”. One swallows saliva while striving to maintain the temple and balance in the very light boat. Without a doubt, the guide cannot do anything but laugh of our city fears.
However, Tres Lagunas is much more than crocodiles (whose life and world, we have to say it, is conveniently located far away from the humans). You can find several things there such as a restaurant, telephone, elevated viewpoints, and well illuminated paths, areas for fire, camping and picnic areas, clean bathrooms, etcetera. All the cabins have a deck with a view to the lagoons. If someone is seeking for tranquility, this can be the ideal place. Writers, artists, Yoga practitioners, without a doubt feel at ease.
But letís go back to the boat in the water and in the darkness, our guide makes us a sign so we can turn our eyes where he is pointing with the steam of the light: a couple of eyes are flashing in the middle of the fog. Nothing spectacular happens. The reptile simple goes away from us, calmly and even indifferent. All of us breathe a sigh of relief, and the guide smiles again. He points up with his finger the real show is just above us, hundreds of millions of stars over the vast black sky. It is great for a post card of the infinitum.
