At the valley next to the Tacana volcano one of the highest elevations in southern Mexico, the mayans developed one of the most important archaeological sites where the Mixe-Zoque and Mayans lived. This place is named Izapa, considered one of the biggest religious and civic centers on the Pacific Valley.

This urban city (1500 B.C) is formed by approximately 80 structures which delimit the central plaza, mayan ball game, patios and and advanced hydraulic system for water management.

The people that lived in Izapa are considered the creators of great scientific achievements, where is considered the oldest place where the use of zero was used and great knowledge from the sky observation. Their biggest development was between the years 300 to 50 B.C.. During this period the sculptured geroglifics, obelisks and monuments, setting the starting point for the mayans to continue with the world famous “Mayan Calendar”.
