Built on a mountain overlooking the plains Comitan that extends to the Lagos de Montebello. The territorial extension of this prehistoric settlement has been calculated in two square kilometers, on which several buildings were built of such civic, religious and housing, which represent the transition from the classical to classic post (900 to 1200 DC). With its strategic location Tenam Puente allowed its people to exercise control over the trade route linking the highlands of Chiapas and Guatemala with the central depression of Chiapas. T he ceramic collections from the excavations of the site, show a very active trade with other remote areas of the region of Comitan, such as shells from the Gulf of Mexico.

Origin The word Tenam is a Nahuatl word meaning “fortress”, while the word Puente to retake the site of the existing farm early this century, in what is now the commons where you will find this attractive. Their main occupation period is for the Classic and Postclassic periods early, when there is abandonment of the Mayan sites of the central zone, in essence, now occupied by the Department of Peten, Guatemala.
