Metzabok landscape of the original world

There are places where nature spilled its gifts with generosity. Metzabok (which means “The Thunder Maker God”) could very well be one of the best examples of this, it has: forest, jungle, a very rich fauna (unfortunately some of them are endangered, such as the Quetzal, the Great Curassow, the Harpy Eagle and the Jaguar), crystal clear waters, landscapes, caves, etcetera.

Upon arriving to the Mezabok lagoon, we find some rowboats and a Cayuco (a small indigenous canoe). The cayuco is extremely narrow and gives you the impression that it can tip over any minute. They explain to us that the […]

Las Golondrinas cascade

The swallows cascade the celebration of senses

Everything at Las Golondrinas is a party. The sound of the mantled howlers and the birdsongs, the vigorous din of the cascades which refresh our face with the breeze, the blue-greenish tones of their river. It is a party, it can only be that.

Its name is neither a coincidence nor a rhetorical excess. Among the cascadeís caves, hundreds of swallows nest. Listening and watching them fly in a cloud at dawn and at sunset is like watching the same image of the bustling joy itself, a celebration of life and its delight.

On the other […]

Tres Lagunas, extreme adventure & nice resting

It is 8 pm and darkness is thick. We are in the middle of a lagoon and the darkness, on the fragile balance of a boat more than slight. Beneath us the patter of the water on the boat and the dense fog are hiding a toothed and terrible threat: the crocodile.

The most shocking thing is that we are there because we want to be there. The sighting of crocodiles is one of the offers that the Ecotourism Center Tres Lagunas (Three Lagoons), can only be accomplished at night and quietly, or almost quietly if we take in consideration that […]

Lacanjá Chansayab mystic and extreme experience

One of the most interesting places to stay in the jungle is Lacanja Chansayab and not only if you want to visit the archeological ruins of Bonampak and Yaxchilan (both of them are very close), but also to do some camping or to practice rafting, swimming and hiking. Its offer is such that you could spend as much as a week without repeating activity.

Upon arrival we stayed at the Kayo´s cabins which are nice, cozy and clean. Our host offered us a walk to a cascade and to some ruins which are not explored by investigators yet. Kayon calls the […]

Lacanjá river, green water snake

Named by the Mayans “Snake of Green Water”, the Lacanja River offers us a break in one of the 13 rustic cabins on the bank of its waters, in one of the most complete campsites, located at the southern end of the town.

Since 2000, this camp works to show the tourism the wonderful rural and cultural zone and offer activities related with adventure and ambiental interpretation.

Everything you could imagine of the Lacandon Jungle is true, from its different activities or excursions: Several trekkings through the jungle, a visit to the Maya Archeological sites, the observation of the flora and fauna, […]

Yaxchilán celestial jaguars of the end of the world

Yaxchilán celestial jaguars of the end of the world

One of the most powerful State-cities of the Maya Civilization was Yaxchilan (which in Maya Language means Green Stonesî). It is so wide and so full of treasures that with justice it could be considered the true architectural jewel of the Lacandon Jungle.

The the current name of Yaxchilan was recently given but it is believed that it was called Paí Chan (Broken sky). Its governors dominated other smaller cities. And it even rivaled with Palenque (It was called Otolum in the past).

It can be reached only […]

Toniná the stone dream stacked by the jungle

Toniná the stone dream stacked by the jungle

Upon arriving, we have the sensation of something very powerful living here. But it is not about the Lords of the Time or the Gods of the Bones in the underworld (but also); it was the jungle, the feared jungle which devours her children to give birth in an infinitive circle.

Tonina means ìThe House of Stoneî or ìThe place where sculptures are raised in honor of timeî. The jungle however has its own conception of time.

Over almost 2000 years (Tonina was founded between the […]
